Douglas Hackney is a national book award winning author and periodical writer with over 100 magazine articles and columns to his credit. Beginning as an award winning writer at age 13, he became a professional commercial photographer at age 16 and continued a media career that included lead acting roles in television commercials; modeling; and as an editor and director of film and video; stage manager; producer; executive producer and production manager.

Mr. Hackney then pursued the development of microcomputer technology, creating a computer graphics technology application and an accompanying market segment. Mr. Hackney has designed and developed computer software and enterprise class computing environments. His most recent chapter was participating in the creation of the information technology sub-segment of Business Intelligence (BI). In addition to building a segment leading BI consulting company, Enterprise Group, Ltd., Mr. Hackney has provided technology, marketing and management consulting for a wide range of the world's leading high technology companies and entrepreneurial coaching and mentoring for highly successful start-ups.

As an industry leader, Mr. Hackney has often been quoted in Information Technology trade magazines such as Computerworld and general business publications such as Forbes, and  has participated in more than a score of  judging panels for industry awards.

Mr. Hackney's writing and photography have appeared in a wide and eclectic assortment of books and periodicals including poetry collections, motorsports, public policy, information technology and business management. Mr. Hackney is currently researching several projects related to digital photography and adventure travel.

Mr. Hackney has served on corporate for- and non-profit boards of directors, including California Arts Advocates, the non-profit statewide Arts lobbying organization for America's most populous state and the world's seventh largest economy.

Mr. Hackney is a well known award winning public speaker and has keynoted and chaired industry conferences worldwide, lectured at leading MBA programs, and is well known for his communication skills and forward oriented insight.

Mr. Hackney holds no undergraduate or graduate degrees and was self-taught in each of his careers.

 

Travel Resume

Douglas Hackney has traveled in six continents through 43 countries via foot, airplane, train, automobile, overland expedition vehicle, motorcycle and sailboat. Mr. Hackney has completed one ocean passage and is certified to sail a vessel up to 53 feet / 16.15 meters in any weather condition, day or night, in coastal waters and open ocean, worldwide.

 

Riding Resume

Douglas Hackney started riding in 1969 at age 12 on a mini-bike, and has been riding continuously ever since,  except for a six year hiatus from 1979 to 1985. He has well over 200,000 miles of street and 25,000 miles of dirt, off-road and dual sport riding experience. Mr. Hackney currently rides a 2004 BMW R1150GS Adventure and a Honda CRF150F. He has ridden on six continents.

 

Riding experience includes:
  • Roadracing school (Keith Code, California Superbike School)

  • Flat track school (Supercamp, Danny Walker)

  • Wheelie school (Keith Code, On One Wheel)

  • Six consecutive years of A loops on the annual Malcolm Smith "No Wimps" dual sport ride.

  • Four consecutive years of the Ridge Runner 500 dual sport ride.

  • Five consecutive years riding 1,600 miles from near the U.S. border to the Southern tip of Baja, California Mexico, 90% on single track, Baja 1,000 race course, two track, rock, silt, mud, sand, deep sand, deeper sand and gravel in six to seven days.(1988-2002)

  • 1,000 mile tour of Central Mexico, two up, on a Suzuki DRZ400, ~80% single track, dirt, two track and gravel. (2001)

  • 1,200 mile tour of the South Island of New Zealand, two up, on a BMW F650GS, ~33% dirt, two track and gravel. (2002)

  • 2,000 mile tour of the Western U.S. from Seattle, WA to San Diego, CA, two up, on a BMW R1150GS Adventure, on mountain roads down the spine of the Cascade, Sierra and San Bernardino Mountains. (2003)

  • 4,500 mile tour of Sub-Saharan Africa, two up, on a BMW R1150GS Adventure, ~40% dirt, silt, mud, sand, two track and gravel, including 450+ mile days on gravel.(2003)

  • 2,500 mile tour of India, Sikkim, West Bengal and Bhutan, two up, on a kick start Royal Enfield Bullet, 22 HP, 500cc single with custom mounted 41 liter Touratech/Zega pannier boxes and a tank bag. (2004)

  • 6,500 mile tour of Turkey, Syria and Jordan, two up, on a BMW R1150GS Adventure. (2004)

  • 2,545 mile ride from Canada to Mexico down the Continental Divide via as many unpaved roads as possible on a BMW R1150GS Adventure. (2004) (5,254 miles total trip mileage door to door)

  • 2,300 mile tour of Japan, two up, on a BMW R1150GS Adventure. (2004)

  • 750 mile tour of China, two up, on a 32 HP Chang-Jiang 750 (flat head pre-war BMW clone) with a sidecar. (2004)

Stephanie Hackney

Stephanie Hackney's began her professional career as an account executive, line manager, and both resident and freelance make-up artist for companies such as Estee Lauder, Revlon (Ultima II), and Visage Cosmetics.

Since then, the majority of her professional career has been within and for start-up companies in America's Silicon Valley. Ms. Hackney began as production manager for a start-up Silicon Valley PR firm, managing collateral production and copy editing, as well as annual events. She then managed the desktop publishing department, as well telemarketing and event management, for a Bay Area start-up market research firm. As the marketing and event manager of a high-tech software start-up which she assisted in taking public, her responsibilities included the development and implementation of the company's marketing programs. Ms. Hackney also successfully managed in excess of 100 educational and marketing events per year, including: seminars, tradeshows, product road shows, executive breakfasts, sales meetings, customer retreats and user conferences. In addition, she served as manager of the internal lead management system and assisted in the implementation of the company's first sales force automation system.

In her role as director of marketing, Ms. Hackney directed all marketing activities for Enterprise Group, Ltd., a Business Intelligence consulting firm serving primarily Global 500 clients. Ms. Hackney's responsibilities included: annual planning; budget forecasting and management; PR management; advertising; market research; management over the development, design and creation of all company marketing materials, including content for the company's website; lead generation and management of the company's CRM system; and, marketing programs, including all company and industry events.

Prior to setting out on this latest round of world travel, Ms. Hackney was the owner of Organized for Living, a professional services firm providing organizing, and process development and optimization, services to individuals and businesses.  Organized for Living increased clients’ ability to better manage their time, resources and opportunities.

Ms. Hackney has been a member of NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) and of the San Diego Chapter of NAPO; a member of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD); a member of San Diego Professional Editors Network (SD/PEN); and a former member of the Advisory Council for Memory Makers Magazine’s Camp Memory Makers.  

Ms. Hackney is also a past board member of Dress For  Success San Diego, a local affiliate of the national non-profit, Dress for Success, which provides interview suits, confidence boosts and career development to disadvantaged women.

Ms. Hackney has written articles for such publications as Scrapbook Dimensions, and wrote a regular magazine column and served for three years as a contributing editor and assistant editor for Meeting of the Minds, the award-winning monthly newsletter of the Minnesota chapter of Meeting Professionals International (MPI); has been quoted in such business publications as Twin Cities Business Monthly; and, holds an AA in liberal arts (with an emphasis in advertising and psychology) from West Valley College.
