Belt drive pulleys & shafts. Early factories were powered by a central line shaft powered by a main steam engine or water wheel. Individual tools, such as drill presses, lathes, etc. were powered by belts that spooled off the main line shaft. Deaver's main line shaft was donated to the Vista, CA, engine and steam museum but the remaining tools are still belt driven from jackshafts powered by electric motors.
