wooded hillside overlooking Weiss Lake on the old James Newberry, Sr. Farm.
The main stone stands about 4 feet tall is four sided and has inscriptions on
all four sides of James Newberry's 3 wives and 19 children. All of the listed
family members are NOT buried at this cemetery but are listed on this stone.

In 1850 John Newberry was living in Cherokee County, AL. The family moved to
Craighead Co. AR and then to Greene Co., AR in the mid 1850's.
He served from 25 Oct 1861 to 1862 in the 3rd Regiment, Arkansas Calvary, Co.
G. CSA.

Carey Rogers lists the date of death as 21 Oct 1862 while on the retreat from a
battle in Corinth, Mississiippi. Confederate troops were cuttng trees on the
road to slow the pursuit by Federal Troops. John Newberry was killed when one
of the trees fell on him.

John and Hasker Newberry (Brothers) came with a Baptist Church Groupf from
Pembroke and Carmarthen County Wales & their minister, Rev. Griffith and
settled on the So called "Welsh Tract" in Cavan So. S.C. on the Pee Dee River.
TheNewberry's drifted north into N>C> still along the Pee Dee in Anson and
Richmond Counties to an area now around Fayetville. Many Newberry's still live
in N.C. Ref. "History of Old Chereaws".
